Six file papers in Chitradurga

Staff Correspondent

‘No differences among BJP leaders in district’

Tippeswamy to file another set of papers today

Two independent candidates also file nominations

Chitradurga: Six candidates filed their nomination papers from the Chitradurga parliamentary constituency here on Thursday.

The first one to file the nomination papers was Janardhanswamy of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Accompanied by Revenue Minister G. Karunakar Reddy, Sports Minister Gulihatti Shekhar, Social Welfare Minister D. Sudhakar and Minister for Sericulture Venkataramanappa, among others, Mr. Janardhanaswamy submitted his nomination papers to Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Amlan Aditya Biswas.

According to directions of the Election Commission, the police ensured that only five persons entered the office of the Deputy Commissioner along with the candidate to file nomination. The others who filed the nomination papers were B. Tippeswamy of the Congress, who was accompanied by district unit president of the party B.G. Govindappa, M. Jayanna of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), M. Ratnakar of the Janata Dal (Secular), and K.H. Durgasimha and M. Kumbaiah, independents.

Mr. Tippeswamy told presspersons that he would be officially filing another set of nomination papers on Friday. “As it was an auspicious day, I filed the nomination papers today,” he said. Later, BJP leaders including Ministers, MLAs from the district and MLC Shivayogiswamy held a press conference at a private guesthouse to “show their unity”.

There were reports of differences surfacing between party leaders and Mr. Shekhar. Mr. Shekhar was reportedly unhappy over the selection Mr. Janardhanaswamy. He had charged the BJP leadership of sidelining him while selecting the party candidate. There was also a rumour that he would resign from the Cabinet and support Mr. Ratnakar, who is the son of former Minister D. Manjunath. “There are no differences among leaders of the party in the district. Mr. Shekhar has agreed to support the candidate selected by the party high command,” Mr. Reddy said.
