‘Addressed poll meet near a school in Balakonda, disturbing students writing SSC exam’ HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) lodged a complaint with the Election Commission on Wednesday that Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy had addressed an election meeting at Balkonda in Nizamabad district close to a school serving as an SSC examination centre, thus causing disturbance to students writing the examinations. The blare of public address system at the campaign meeting had disturbed students and this amounted to violation of model code, it said. Chief Electoral Officer I. V. Subba Rao said he was ascertaining facts from the Nizamabad Collector on whether the Chief Minister had violated the code. The headmaster of the school, however, is said to have stated that the playground where the meeting took place and the school were separated by a compound wall. The Central observer of the constituency Ms. Meera Sreetsava, said she would a submit report to the Collector. The CEO said a case had been booked against the Congress candidate of Srikakulam Assembly constituency, D. Krishna Das, and his party for violating the code by using an 108 ambulance to carry his followers while filing his nomination papers. Notices were served to the candidate as also the party, he said. Mr. Subba Rao, who reviewed matters relating to manufacture and supply of liquor in the State with Excise officials, finally ruled out possibility of closing the shops completely during the election period. He said the Excise Department was not accepting the proposal as it would cause a revenue loss of Rs. 600 crore. He said following strict enforcement of Excise laws, the off-take of liquor, however, had come down by 12 per cent during March 2009 (32.3 lakh cases to 28.4 lakh cases) compared to March last.
