Desertions continue in Telugu Desam

Special Correspondent

TENALI: Dissent among the Telugu Desam Party leaders and cadre continued in Guntur district on Wednesday and former Tenali MLA and party ticket aspirant Gogineni Uma resigned from the party primary membership following party giving B form to former Minister Alapati Rajendra Prasad.

In a copy of letter written to party president Nara Chandrababu Naidu and released to the mediapersons here on Wednesday, the former MLA said that she had left her profession as a doctor 10 years ago when he wanted her services in the party to serve the society. “I regret to inform you that I have chosen to quit the party after you find me not suitable to represent the party. I was forced to come into this thankless profession by you, but now I wish to go back to my noble profession.”

She won from Tenali in 1999 and lost in Congress wave in 2004 elections. Another wave of revolt came from Annabattuni Siva Kumar, another strong contender for the Tenali seat. He along with a host of his followers would take a decision very soon on whether to remain in the party or quit.

Support sought

Meanwhile, Vemuru constituency represented by Mr. Rajendra Prasad, has been reserved for the SCs, but was successful in getting a ticket for himself and met both the rebel leaders and sought their cooperation in the town after kicking off his campaign a bit late. It will be a keen fight between sitting Congress MLA Nadendla Manohar and Mr. Rajendra Prasad with PRP yet to finalise the candidate.

The Telugu Desam is also yet to finalise its candidates from Vemuru, Bapatla and Tadikonda constituencies. While Ummareddy Venkateswarlu is likely to be nominated from Bapatla, former Minister J. Pushparaj is facing stiff resistance in Tadikonda. A close aide of Mr. Rajendra Prasad, Nakka Ananda Babu, is likely to get the ticket from Vemuru.
