Police intensify probe into idol theft
Staff Reporter
KOCHI: The police are trying to obtain leads into the burglary committed at the Adi Sankara Janmabhoomi temple, Kalady, on Saturday, by looking into similar crimes committed in the recent past and placing known criminals under surveillance.
A 48-member Special Investigation Team has been formed to probe the burglary, in which the idol, believed to be made of emerald, some silver utensils and cash in the collection box placed near the tomb of Adi Sankara’s mother, were stolen.
Director General of Police Jacob Punnoose visited the temple on Monday and held discussions police officials in the region.
The temple is situated on the banks of river Periyar and those involved in sand-mining and related activities are being closely monitored.
The expertise of police officers who have handled similar cases is also being tapped to crack this case, which has attracted media attention as political leaders dropped in at the temple during their election campaigns.
