Land of rising sons

A. Saye Sekhar

Andhra Pradesh has become the land of the rising ‘sons.’ This is because the offspring of almost all the big leaders have a stake in the elections.

Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, son of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and K.T. Rama Rao, son of Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K. Chandrasekhara Rao, are both making their electoral debut this time.

Marri Shashidhar Reddy, son of former Chief Minister Channa Reddy; Kotla Suryaprakash Reddy, son of former Chief Minister K. Vijayabhaskara Reddy; P.V. Ranga Rao and P.V. Rajeswara Rao, sons of former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao; Nadendla Manohar, son of former Chief Minister Bhaskar Rao; Jalagam Prasada Rao and Venkata Rao, sons of former Chief Minister Vengala Rao; and many others have been in politics. The list is long.

Ram Charan Teja, actor, sang a song for the campaign album of the Praja Rajyam whose president is his father, K. Chiranjeevi.

By conceptualising the ‘cash transfer’ scheme for the Telugu Desam Party’s manifesto, the United States-educated Nara Lokesh Naidu, son of party supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu, signalled yet another possible ‘son rise.’
