KOCHI: Adequate number of electronic voting machines needed in the district for the Lok Sabha elections has been readied. Checks were conducted on 2,500 voting machines, including reserve ones, and their functionality had been ensured. Officials from the Electronic Corporation of India carried out inspections and maintenance that lasted two weeks. Another 1,500 voting machines being kept at the collectorate would also be readied in the coming days. If need be, they would be handed over to the neighbouring districts, said E.P. Rajan, Deputy Collector (Elections). District Collector M. Beena had ordered the appointment of 135 sectoral officials for proper coordination between polling stations, electoral registration officers and assistant returning officers. Village officers had been included in the team of sectoral officers to ensure that their practical knowledge on the field was effectively utilised. They will also have the authority to function as zonal magistrates. Sectoral officers had been appointed based on the location of polling centres. Mr. Rajan said that 200-odd micro observers would be appointed once the order regarding polling duty was circulated across the district.
