NEW DELHI: Nine young men allegedly engaged in auto-lifting have been arrested during a special drive launched by the police to check vehicle thefts in South Delhi. The police claim to have recovered ten stolen vehicles from the accused. The Special Staff of the police recently received a tip-off that one such gang headed by Kishan was active in the area. The police laid a trap near a temple on Nelson Mandela Marg after they learnt that he along with his accomplices would be going towards Gurgaon through Outer Ring Road in a Maruti Esteem car and a Tata Safari on Friday. The police were checking the vehicles when some of the suspects arrived in the Tata Safari. On spotting the Special Staff team, they tried to accelerate but could not escape because of the barricades. The occupants, identified as Kishan, Kailash, Sammi and Samsher Ali, were arrested after the vehicle was found to be stolen from Kirti Nagar. During interrogation, Kishan purportedly disclosed that his other accomplices would pass through the same route in a Maruti Esteem. Subsequently the vehicle was intercepted and three of the occupants, Munna, Naresh and Suresh Kumar, all alleged receivers of stolen property, were arrested. The Esteem, which bore a fake registration number plate, was found to be stolen from Model Town. Kishan allegedly told the police that he was previously involved in several auto-lifting cases and had been arrested thrice. He was first arrested about six years ago at Shalimar Garden in Ghaziabad in 2007 and by the Special Staff of the South Delhi police in 2008. According to the police, Kishan is adept at making duplicate keys of vehicles. At his instance, they claim to have recovered eight more stolen vehicles. The police said the gang used to dismantle old vehicles and sell new ones to innocent buyers fraudulently. In another case, the squad arrested alleged auto-lifters Jaspreet Singh and Manoj and claim to have recovered five stolen cars and five motorcycles from them. They were arrested when they were travelling in a stolen Toyota Qualis on March 23.
