Whirlwind knock by Gopinath

Special Correspondent

Chennai: A hurricane 141 by India Pistons’ K.H. Gopinath — his third century in successive innings — was the highlight of the first day in the 11th round of the TNCA first division league here on Wednesday.

Opening the innings, wicket-keeper batsman Gopinath took just 30 balls to reach his half- century against Parry’s at the CPT-IP ground. His next 50 consumed only 29 deliveries as Gopinath blazed his way to a century before lunch.

During his belligerent 141 (92b, 24x4, 2x5), Gopinath shared a 202-run opening stand in 28.4 overs with M.R. Shrinivas (69, 96b, 14x4). Gopinath also crossed the 700-run mark for the season.

I.T. Tabarak Baig contributed 59 in Pistons’ total of 388. For Parry’s, paceman C. Madhu took four wickets for 136.

S. Suresh Kumar remained unbeaten on 109 (153b, 1x6, 12x4) as Grand Slam reached 347 for eight against Young Stars at the IC-Guru Nanak ground. There was a weighty effort by E. Ashwin (89, 124b, 15x4) while K.B. Arun Karthik (60, 82b, 9x4) and R. Naresh (67, 137b, 7x4) came up with useful knocks. Left-arm spinner L. Ganesh and leggie S. Samuel scalped three each.

Honeymen shines

M. Vijay Bharatram (129, 262b, 14x4, 3x6) was the century-maker for UFCC (T. Nagar) against Alwarpet at the RKM-Vivekananda ground. And S. Thiyagarajan scored 63 (75b, 11x4) as UFCC was dismissed for 294. Paceman Gary Dumenil and off-spinner Huzefa M. Patel claimed three wickets each.

Vijay off-spinners R. Ashwin (four for 61) and A.K. Balachander (two wickets) were instrumental in Southern Railway Institute’s collapse from 171 for four to 190 all out at the Southern Railway ground. For the Railway side, S. Raghunath made 43 and Kevin Sukumar 51. Vijay was 146 for two in reply with K. Shree Vasudeva Das on 86 (103b, 12x4, 2x6).

Indian Bank was 249 for seven against Globe Trotters at the MRF-Pachaiappa’s ground. E. Suresh was batting on 84 (152b, 1x6, 9x4) at stumps.
