The students competed with 30 other teams from across the country. KOCHI: Intelligent students make intelligent products. So it was not surprising when three young students of Model Engineering College at Thrikkakara came up with something really intelligent – ‘a power-efficient intelligent lighting system’. Harisankar A., Jaison Varghese, and Raveendra Pai G., all eighth semester electronics and communication students, presented their innovation at the iTalent all-India project presentation contest and simply walked away with the first prize. “i-lighting is a low power consuming lighting system that makes use of white LEDs (light emitting diodes) instead of conventional bulbs and tube lights. LEDs are known for their lower power consumption and higher life time (60,000 hours on average) compared with light bulbs. This lighting system is intelligent in many respects,” say the engineering talents. The lighting system turns on automatically when someone enters a room and turns off when nobody is in the room. The intensity of light varies according to the ambient light in the room. If there is more sunlight, only a few LEDs turn on and if the light is less, more LEDs turn on. The three bagged a purse of Rs. 30,000 for their project in the contest organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries at SRM University in Chennai on February 27 and 28. They also received a trophy and citation for their work. The achievement was unique, as they competed with 30 other teams short listed from a total of 90 projects across the country.
