NEW DELHI: Top seed K. Humpy maintained her joint second place in the Women’s Grand Prix chess by defeating former World champion Maia Chiburdanidze in the sixth round at Istanbul on Friday. Humpy, playing white, needed 42 moves to overpower the veteran campaigner and reached five points. Her tally was matched by China’s Zhao Xue after she beat local girl Betul Cemre Yildiz. Chinese second seed Hou Yifan posted her fifth straight victory to maintain her top place with 5.5 points. She scored an easy 31-move victory with black over Ecuador’s Martha Fierro Baquero. The results: Sixth round: K. Humpy (5) bt Maia Chiburdanidze (Geo, 2.5); Martha Feirro Baquero (Ecu, 3.5) lost to Hou Yifan (Chn, 5.5); Betul Cemre Yildiz (Tur, 0.5) lost to Zhao Xue (Chn, 5); Antoaneta Stefanova (Bul, 3) lost to Elina Danielian (Arm, 4); Pia Cramling (Swe, 1.5) drew with Marie Sebag (Fra, 2.5); Zeinab Mamedjarova (Aze, 1.5) bt Shen Yang (Chn, 1.5).
