BJP promises girl child scheme

Under ‘Adabidda andalam’, Rs.21,116 will be deposited in the child’s name at birth

‘BJP manifesto will become the focal point of discussion for other parties’

HYDERABAD: Apart from Telangana, the BJP has promised in its draft manifesto a navigation link to the sea through a series of check dams and barrages across the Godavari to benefit the region, besides a special scheme for the girl child.

The draft was submitted to State BJP president B. Dattatreya by chairman of the manifesto committee, Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, here on Tuesday.

Listing other promises, Mr. Rao told reporters that a children’s commission would be established to safeguard their interests/rights.

It would implement youth empowerment schemes (YES) and provide sops to senior citizens and communities like weavers and toddy tappers. It proposes to make villages self-reliant.

Under the girl child scheme ‘Adabidda andalam’, Rs.21,116 each would be deposited in the child’s name at birth and handed over on attaining 18 years.

The manifesto, to be released on March 14, was aimed at making the party emerge as a decisive force in the State, he said.

Nirmala Sitaraman, committee convener, said the manifesto would address problems facing the State’s economy, both at macro and micro-levels, without predominantly depending on the excise revenue.

It did not promise doles indiscriminately but only to the needy.

Mr. Dattatreya said the manifesto would be sent to every village.

It would become the focal point of discussion for other parties.

Second list soon

He clarified that the State Election Committee of the party had finalised candidates for 42 Assembly and eight Lok Sabha seats in the first list and not as reported.

The second list would be firmed up on March 15.

Asked about the reported move of senior leader U.V. Krishnam Raju to join the Congress, he said that he had spoken to him twice on Monday and that the latter had denied quitting the party.
