Congress screening panel discusses Delhi list

Gaurav Vivek Bhatnagar

Each seat and name deliberated upon on a case-to-case basis

NEW DELHI: The Screening Committee of the Congress constituted by party president Sonia Gandhi for selection of Lok Sabha candidates from Delhi met for the second time on Monday and discussed the names of the aspirants for the seven seats.

According to sources, each seat and name was discussed on a case-to-case basis during the meeting and no specific guidelines were followed. The emphasis once again is on the ability of the candidates to win as the party feels every single seat would matter in the formation of the next government at the Centre.

The meeting was chaired by Satyavrat Chaturvedi and four other members — the AICC general secretary in charge of Delhi affairs, Mukul Wasnik, Rajya Sabha member P.J. Kurien, DPCC president J.P. Agarwal and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit — attended it.

Sources said while some solo names have been arrived at for some seats, there is a panel of names for others.

While it was being said that sitting legislators or those accused in the 1984 riots cases would be treated differently, that was not the case. Just the way New Delhi MP Ajay Maken and Karol Bagh MP Krishna Tirath were allowed to contest in 2004 when they were MLAs, now again there are no restrictions.

It appears the ghost of the 1984 riots would not come to haunt the politicians. The party is keen to ensure that it has the best horses for courses and there are as few hurdles in their way as possible.

While the Screening Committee had first met on Saturday and met again on Monday, sources said another meeting would be held only if the need was felt. Otherwise the names would be placed before the Central Election Committee headed by Ms. Gandhi for her final approval. But as Delhi goes to polls only in the fourth phase on May 7, the announcement of names could still take some time.
