NEW DELHI: Fortis healthcare is helping a group of doctors, caregivers, patients and donors to set up a non-government organisation, Society for Kidney Support. It would provide support and succour to patients suffering from kidney diseases and promote general awareness for prevention and timely treatment. The organisation, which will be launched this coming Friday, is aimed at “generating awareness about organ sharing and donation through a network of support and volunteer group, to promote a positive outlook among patients and to build up confidence in patients to face the existing problems,” said a member of the group, Niharika Singh. “We are also working towards garnering logistics and human support from the corporate sector and multi-nationals and to form a network of support and volunteer group for all kidney patients. The group will also work towards providing moral support through counselling and interaction with kidney patients and educate patients and their caregivers about dialysis,” added Ms. Singh. Kidney diseases are ranked as the seventh largest killer among all diseases prevalent worldwide. What makes them more deadly is that they encroach silently, manifesting most of the symptoms only in the advanced stages. Moreover, as the disease strikes at the end stage, it brings not only great physical and mental trauma but financial hardship too due to the high cost of treatment. The challenges can be overwhelming for patients and their families.
