Says over 6,000 police personnel required; services of NCC and NSS volunteers to be utilised if needed

Top district officials attend CEO’s videoconference

Peaceful conduct of polls top priority, says

I.V. Subba Rao

Srikakulam: Left wing extremism in the Uddanam area, 26 polling stations located at distant places and in inaccessible areas are some of the major challenges the authorities face in the smooth conduct of elections in the district, according to district Collector N. Srikanth.

Participating in a videoconference addressed by the Chief Electoral Officer I.V. Subba Rao here on Thursday, Mr. Srikanth said that 6,500 police personnel would be needed to ensure law and order during voting. He said that the services of NCC and NSS volunteers would also be utilised, if necessary. Mr. Subba Rao lauded the Collectors and Superintendents of Police for effectively performing their duties ever since the model code of conduct came into force. He said that peaceful conduct of elections was a top priority and that recruitment of police, teachers’ appointments and housing activities should take a back seat.

He said that election observers would start touring their respective districts to oversee the implementation of the model code of conduct.

Additional DIG A.K. Khan said that bind over cases should be filed on rowdy-sheeters if necessary while being vigilant on their movements and activities. He said that extremist-affected areas should be thoroughly scanned despite a decline in their activities. Superintendent of Police Ch. Srikanth, Joint Collector E. Sridhar, DRO Shariff and RDO Satyanarayana were among those who attended the videoconference.

In-camera meet

Dinesh Kumar, election observer for the district, held an in-camera meeting with Mr. Srikanth, Mr. Sridhar and other Returning Officers for Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in the district.

Mr. Kumar reviewed the on-going enrolment of voters, preparation of electoral lists and photo identity cards and sought a status report in this regard. He asked the personnel to complete issuing identity cards before the commencement of nominations.
