New twist to Banaswadi deaths

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The death of a couple, who were shot on Sunday at Banaswadi, took a new twist on Monday. Though the police had said on Sunday that the couple — Javed Akthar and Hazira Bano — had been murdered by his relatives in connection with financial disputes, they termed it a suicide on Monday.

“Investigation has proved that businessman Akthar (33) shot Hazira (30) and later committed suicide by shooting himself with his licensed revolver,” City Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari said.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Bidari said though three persons had been secured in connection with the incident, investigation had proved that they had not fired at the couple.

Akthar, owner of a travel agency on Bhagwan Mahaveer Road, and Hazira were found with bullet injuries at their house in Vivekanandanagar off Banaswadi Main Road on Sunday. They died on the way to hospital.

“Akthar had borrowed Rs. 6.5 crore from several people. He had taken a loan of Rs. 1.5 crore from Haneef Sait, Fathima and Suleman and had invested the money in real estate with their friend Syed Ali, who is now absconding. On Sunday, the trio had visited Akthar’s house and had a heated argument with him and his wife. After that, when they were about to leave the house Akthar bolted the room from inside and committed the crime,” Mr. Bidari said.

“There is circumstantial evidence to prove that Akthar murdered his wife. However, we are waiting for the ballistic expert’s opinion from the Forensic Science Laboratory,” he added. Meanwhile, Akthar’s parents have requested the city police to take stringent action against Haneef, Fathima and Suleman, holding them responsible for their son’s death.
