Honour: Actor Rajnikanth, Ministers Katta Subramanya Naidu and Shobha Karandlaje, at a function to felicitate film personalities for their contribution to the industry, during the 75th year celebrations of Kannada cinema in Bangalore on Monday.

BANGALORE: Naming the great writers of Kannada literature, whom he read, Tamil superstar Rajnikanth has suggested that the Kannada cinema industry adopt good short stories and novels for its own welfare.

He was responding to felicitations offered to him and 107 other personalities, including veteran film director Dasari Narayana Rao and producer D. Rama Naidu, extended by the Kannada cinema industry on the occasion of its platinum jubilee here on Monday.

Tracing his growth as a cinema buff to stardom, Mr. Rajnikanth said that he was impressed by the late B.R. Pantulu’s Makkala Rajya and had grown by watching films of the thespian of Kannada cinema the late Rajkumar. Although he was interested to act in Kannada cinema, he was not sure when the Almighty would consider his wish, he said amid thunderous applause.

Observations seconded

He said that he had read his friend Kamal Haassan’s statement at the inaugural session of the Amruta Mahotsava of Kannada cinema. He would second the observations of Mr. Kamal Haassan on the need for unity among the film fraternity rising above language, caste and religion as it was profound and serene. “We artistes belong to humanity and we should stand above all parochial considerations in the larger interest,” he said.

Among those present on the occasion include the Minister for Information Katta Subramanya Naidu, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Shobha Karandlaje, president of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce Jaimala, producer Parvathamma Rajkumar and president of the Kannada Film Producers’ Association K.C.N. Chandrashekhar.
