News Analysis
A report “Karat slams UPA policies” (February 22, 2009) said that Mr. P. Chidambaram is the Finance Minister. Mr. Chidambaram is now the Union Home Minister. The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “Lalu worries over funds for poll campaign” (February 22, 2009) said Mr. V. Kurien is the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) chairman. As the text said, Mr. Kurien is not the chairman now, but the founder chairman of the NDDB. In the column “Out of London”, titled “How Americans slept through the Khomeini revolution” (Op-Ed, February 19, 2009), the reference to “notorious American politician Eugene McCarthy” was an error. As a number of readers point out, it should have been Joseph McCarthy. The late U.S Senator Eugene McCarthy earned much admiration in India and most of Asia in the late 1960s by his steadfast opposition to the Vietnam war. The late Sen. Joseph McCarthy, who carried on a witch-hunt against leftists in American public life in the early 1950s, was reviled by public opinion world-wide and was eventually exposed. Eugene McCarthy was one of the few members of the Senate who firmly opposed his notorious namesake, all along! An AFP report “Flintoff doubtful” (“Sport”, February 21, 2009) said that England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is doubtful for the fourth Test against the West Indies after suffering a hip injury during the third Test which ended in a draw at St. John’s. A reader said that it was the second test of the series which ended in a draw. This put him in doubt for the third test, and not fourth test as published. The Sports Desk clarifies that the report is right. The second Test was abandoned after a day’s play. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
