Letters to the Editor
The news that Slumdog Millionaire has won eight Oscars and A.R. Rahman has won two of them is a matter of pride for India. Hearty congratulations to Rahman and the rest of the Slumdog team. A.J. Rangarajan, Chennai The award which proved elusive for India all these years has finally come with a bang. The entire Indian nation is proud of the stupendous achievements of the Slumdog team. Congratulations to all Indians who share the optimism and hope of the movie’s protagonist. Manoj Ratan Chothe, New Delhi The success at the Oscars will encourage directors to take up new challenges. But we must also remember that Slumdog is an English film, although it is set in India. One hopes the day is not far off when an all-Indian film crew will make it big. Raghavendra R. Pawar, Bangalore Three Oscars for three Indians on a single day for a film — we couldn’t have asked for better. Rahman, Gulzar, and Resul Pookutty, and Megan Mylan have put India on the global map. C.M. Umanath, Kozhikode To see an Indian movie doing so well at the Oscars is a dream come true. Let the Slumdog success mark the beginning of a new era in Indian films. One hopes it will encourage Indian cinema to look for a greater presence in world cinema. C. Ramalingam, Tiruchi V. Govindarajan, Singapore Vaibhav C. Ghalme, New Delhi Slumdog Millionaire turned out to be one of the biggest surprises. Everybody has the option to make a film but to do it perfectly needs skill and commitment. It is time for us to stop complaining about the theme and enjoy the Indian presence at the academy awards ceremony. Thejus Joseph Jose, Kottayam S. Arshad Ali, Madanapalle
