Karat: third front will form government

Special Correspondent

Prakash Karat

CHANDIGARH: Communist Party of India (Marxist) general Secretary Prakash Karat said on Sunday that a “non- BJP and non-Congress dispensation” would assume power at the Centre after the Lok Sabha polls.

Addressing a well-attended rally at Fatehabad in Haryana, Mr. Karat announced the CPI (M)’s decision to contest from the Sirsa Lok Sabha seat; Ram Kumar Bahbalpuria would be the party’s candidate.

According to a press release issued by CPI (M) Haryana State secretary Inderjeet Singh, hundreds of farmers and agriculture workers took part in the rally.

Mr. Karat said the party had been consistently raising the people’s main demands relating to land, food security and employment.

He said the global meltdown would adversely affect the national economy and millions of people were going to lose their jobs.

Mr. Singh ridiculed the claim of the Haryana government that the State was number one in the country. He alleged that foeticides, dowry deaths and honour killings were regular occurrences in the State. Laying new roads alone could not be the parameter of real growth and development, he said.
