Small ships division to be ready by third quarter

Staff Reporter

Kochi: The Small Ships Division being set up at the Cochin Shipyard at an investment of Rs.98 crore is expected to be ready by the third quarter of this year. Once operational, it will have infrastructure facilities such as paint coating shop, fabrication of blocks, ancillary shops, pipe shop and steel preparation facilities, a shipyard spokesperson has said.

With the construction of the indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) well on schedule, its keel-laying has been tentatively fixed for February 28, pending a go-ahead from the Prime Minister’s Office. While the IAC will keep the yard busy for nearly four years, the small ships division is expected to help it simultaneously build at least four medium-sized ships.

However, the number of ships that can be built in the form of pre-assembled blocks will depend upon the type of ships.

Launching arrangements will be from the existing dry dock after assembly.
