Governor holds meeting with Chief Minister on law and order situation

S. Rajendran

It is the first time that such a meeting has taken place in nine months

Governor plans to send detailed report on the situation to Prime Minister, Union Home Minister

Bangalore: Governor Rameshwar Thakur is reported to have impressed on Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa the need to ensure proper law and order in the State, particularly in the light of the threats and counter-threats by some organisations ahead of Valentine’s Day on Saturday.

Thursday’s meeting between the Governor and the Chief Minister was in the backdrop of the string of communal incidents that have been reported from Dakshina Kannada district over the past fortnight, with some of the Sangha Parivar outfits having allegedly triggered the incidents. It was the first time in nine months that the Raj Bhavan called up the Chief Minister’s secretariat to convey the Governor’s intention to meet the Chief Minister at the earliest. Mr. Yeddyurappa, who was interacting with senior officials of the Government on the State Budget, rushed to the Raj Bhavan ahead of a scheduled Cabinet meeting. Sources in the Governor’s establishment told The Hindu that Mr. Thakur planned to send a detailed report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Minister for Home P. Chidambaram on the developments in the State. Apart from the Chief Minister’s reply during the discussions, the Governor would also incorporate the salient features of a memorandum submitted to him by senior leaders of the Congress party. Asked about his meeting with the Governor, the Chief Minister said that it was a courtesy call.
