The scheme will benefit about 2 lakh people living in 51 wards It will put an end to groundwater pollution, mosquito menace NAGERCOIL: Work on an ambitious underground drainage project covering 51 wards of Nagercoil municipality would commence within a month, said its Chairman Ashokan Solomon. Speaking to The Hindu here on Thursday, he said that the civic body had sent a proposal for implementation of the Rs. 134-crore project scheme to the Centre under the integrated small and medium town improvement scheme. The project was expected to be completed by 2013 and would benefit a little over two lakh people. Out of the fund, 80 per cent would come from the Central government, while 10 per cent each would be provided by the State government and the municipality, Mr. Ashokan said. In the first phase, 19 wards would be covered initially and 22 wards later. The remaining 10 wards would be covered in the second phase. On completion, the entire municipality would stand to benefit in many ways — groundwater pollution caused by open sewage, including septic tanks and soak pits could be prevented; residents would get potable water; and more importantly, mosquito menace could be prevented to a great extent, Mr. Ashokan said.
