137 films for SIGNS

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 137 films would figure in the competition and focus sections of the fourth edition of SIGNS, the Indian festival of features and non-features for the John Abraham National Awards, being organised by the Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI).

The eight-day festival, to be inaugurated by Culture Minister M.A. Baby at the Kalabhavan Theatre on February 12, would have eminent film-maker Mani Kaul as chairman of the jury for feature films and Arun Khopkar as chairman of the jury for non-feature films. The members of the feature film jury are Fareeda Mehta and Rajeev Vijayaraghavan and that for non-feature films Chalam Bennurkar and B. Ajit Kumar.

The main focus of the festival would be on the competition section.

As many as 57 documentaries, 58 short films and 22 feature films would be screened as part of the festival. Besides the best feature film, documentary and short film, ‘cinema of resistance’ and experimental films too would be given awards. The award has a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh and a citation.

There would also be a special section on Asian documentaries, featuring seven films selected from the Pusan and Taiwan festivals, and a first-ever section on video art in any Indian festivals.

The festival is being organised by the FFSI Kerala chapter in association with the Department of Culture, Directorate of Public Relations, Kerala State Film Development Corporation, Kerala State Chalachitra Academy and Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation. Delegate passes can be had from the FFSI office at Kalabhavan.
