Jute workers take out ‘hungry rally’
Correspondent
VIZIANAGARAM: Over 2,500 Nellimarla Jute Mill Workers and their families took out a ‘hungry rally’ from IFTU office in Nellimarla to P. Sambasiva Raju, senior Congress MLA’s house in Moida village, on Saturday morning. The rally passed via Moida junction, Thomaspeta and Jarajapupeta villages.
The workers, who had been on strike for the last 141 days, were demanding payment of gratuity to the tune of Rs.8 crores to 5,000 workers who retired over the years besides regularisation of badli workers.
Jute Mill Workers’ Union president J.V. Chalapathi Rao, in a memorandum submitted to the MLA, demanded that Mr. Raju bring pressure on the Labour Minister and Chief Minister to solve their long-pending problem. Tense situation prevailed for some time when workers protested against the MLA’s statement that the present situation was due to presence of some stooges to the management. The situation subsided after he shifted blame on Congress cadres.
IFTU State general secretary P. Prasad called upon workers to unite and fight for their rights.
