CHENNAI: Two-way traffic will be allowed on the Gandhi Mandapam flyover over the junction of Adyar Cancer hospital-Kotturpuram signal on Sardar Patel Road for three hours in the evening from Tuesday. A press release from the police said it would be allowed from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to clear the vehicles moving towards Raj Bhavan from the Madhya Kailash junction. This would also lead to optimal utilisation of the flyover, it said. At all other times, the flyover would be for use only by vehicles moving from Raj Bhavan to the Madhya Kailash junction. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar told The Hindu that a study found that traffic in the evenings from Raj Bhavan to Madhya Kailash was not very heavy and that one lane on the flyover should be able to take the traffic. “So we thought we could utilise the other lane for the traffic from the other direction.” Changes have been made to the medians on both sides of the flyover for the two-way traffic. A few metres of the concrete median have been removed by the Chennai Corporation, which maintains the flyover, and movable barricades have been kept in place. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said safety and comfort of drivers would be studied for a couple of days since the flyover had been designed for one-way traffic.
