Ramalinga Raju, brother sent to police custody

HYDERABAD: Satyam’s former chairman B. Ramalinga Raju, his brother Rama Raju and the former chief financial officer, Srinivas Vadlamani, faced only “light interrogation” on day one in police custody on Sunday.

Sleuths of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), who took into custody the Raju brothers and Mr. Vadlamani for four days from the Chanchalguda Central Jail, questioned them for 30-45 minutes in what was described as “a not-so-hostile atmosphere” at the CID office.

After bringing the three from the prison, CID officials served them lunch and seated them in a room on the third floor of the building that houses a row of cells used for depositing property recovered by police.

The CID summoned the three in turns to face investigating officer N. Balaji Rao, who is in the rank of a Deputy Superintendent of Police, in the presence of their lawyers. There were no officials of the central investigating agencies.

Additional Director-General of Police, CID, A. Siva Narayan told The Hindu that the objective of the interrogation was to strike a chord with the accused and acquaint themselves with the three. Serious interrogation would begin on Monday.

The investigating officers left at 5.30 p.m. in pursuance of the court order that interrogation be suspended at night. Later, a cardiologist and a general physician of the Osmania General Hospital examined Mr. Ramalinga Raju, who complained of health problems at the time of his arrest. A doctor checked him before he left the jail.

Earlier, armed with the court order that granted police custody for the three, the CID officials picked them up from the jail around noon.
