CHENNAI: Security at the bus terminus in Koyambedu has been intensified after two Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses, including one near the terminus, were damaged on Saturday by cadres of a political party. A total of 13 members of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) have been arrested in connection with the two separate incidents in support of the fast by the party leader Thol. Thirumavalavan. Tension prevailed in the areas for sometime following the incidents. However, no one was hurt. According to police, nine VCK members led by a district secretary of the party intercepted the MTC bus plying on M 70 route at Koyambedu around 8 p.m. Spotting the group, which was armed with stones, bottles and clubs, the crew and the passengers got down and fled to safety. Thereafter, the group doused the interior of the bus with kerosene and set it ablaze. Following a complaint lodged by the driver of the bus, Velayutham, with the Koyambedu police, Vetrichelvan (40), Ilango (24), Kolangi (20), Ramesh (21) and Sekar (35) were arrested a little later and remanded to custody. In another incident, four VCK activists were arrested for breaking the windshield of an MTC bus at Ilango Nagar, Virugambakkam. Annadurai (31), Robert (26), Rajesh (21) and Arun (21) were lodged in the Puzhal prison.
