TIRUCHI: In a freak incident, a shunting diesel locomotive hit two reserved coaches of the Chennai-bound Guruvayur Express near the Tiruchi railway junction on Friday, injuring a railway trolley man, a six-month-old child, her father and another passenger. Thangaraj, the trolley man from Manapparai, who was walking along the of the track, sustained head injuries and has been admitted to the Divisional Headquarters Railway Hospital at Ponmalai. The other injured were identified as six-month-old Reena, Sivakumar and Sudhir Biswas. The train was detained for over two hours at the station. After the damaged coaches were replaced, it left at 4.55 p.m. The collision caused substantial damage to the two sleeper class coaches and the front portion of the shunting loco. The accident took place around 2.20 p.m. between the Tiruchi junction and the Broad Gauge Coaching Complex Yard when the train was about to enter the Tiruchi junction. It was chugging along on the main line towards platform No.1 when the shunting engine moving on the opposite side towards the yard hit the side of the reserved coaches at the ‘crossover’ point.
