TIRUCHI: Five undergraduate students of The American College, Madurai, are in the midst of a Kanyakumari-Chennai cycle expedition, propagating world peace and creating awareness of voting rights among the youth.

The team comprising K. Srivijayavel Rajan, M. Saravanakumar, R. Raja, P. Nishanth, and J. Peter, all sportspersons, commenced their expedition at Kanyakumari on January 13, and would reach Chennai on January 19.

The students aspire to meet Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi with a request to involve the government machinery in creating awareness of voting rights in colleges and facilitate distribution of voter identity cards to students in their respective institutions.

Citizens have to perform the duty (of voting) first before claiming their rights, Srivijayavel Rajan, the organiser, emphasised, during the team’s stopover in Tiruchi on Friday.

En route their journey, they have been urging people to realise that voting is a duty rather than a right.
