SITTING PRETTY: The victorious Anna University women’s ball badminton team. — TIRUCHI: The sterling performance of Anna varsity team saw it reign over the rest at the all-India inter-University ball badminton tournament for women here. The tourney, hosted by the Bharathidasan University, saw participation of more than 40 varsities from various parts of the country. Semi-finalsAnna, Mangalore, Mahatma Gandhi and Bharathidasan Universities made it to the semi-final league, overcoming some stiff challenges. The five-day tournament saw the teams displaying their unquenchable fighting spirit in pursuit of the top honour. The host gave its best but had to settle for the fourth place. First timeThe matches also enjoyed good support from the students. “Though Bharathidasan University has been conducting all-India inter-varsity tournaments on several occasions, it is for the first time that the event is being held in the University campus. The venue holds a special significance,” said the Head, Department of Physical Education of the varsity, K. Chandrasekaran. Booma Ponnavaikko gave away the prizes in the presence of Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko.
