Coimbatore: Security was tightened at Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchirapalli airports following a bomb threat received by the office of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Coimbatore Range on Monday night. According to police sources, the DIG office received a phone call in which the caller said that explosions would take place at the three airports in the State. The call was traced to London and attempts to establish communication with the said number were in vain since the calls were routed to the voice mail box. The DIG’s office immediately reported the same to the Inspector-General of Police, West Zone.
Following the call, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in charge of security arrangements at airports flashed an alert to the Madurai and Tiruchirapalli airports. At Coimbatore, CISF Deputy Commandant Arun Singh strengthened the security arrangements. The Coimbatore City Police has also set up four to five layers of security check points for scanning the vehicles entering the airport. Outside the terminal building, the CISF established multiple layers of security cover. CISF authorities also installed an Explosive Trace Detector machine at the entry point of the terminal building to scan the luggage of the passengers. Hand Held Metal Detectors and Door Frame Metal Detectors are also being used. Intensive round-the-clock vigil has been ensured besides conducting anti-sabotage checks at the terminal buildings and car parks. Police sources recall a similar phone call relating to threat perception in Chennai which was again a London number.
