“Diocesan Council election results can be declared only with court’s permission”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Monday ordered that the result of the election to various committees of the CSI Madras Diocesan Council (MDC) during the 32nd session of MDC between January 13 and 16 should be declared only with the permission of the court.

Justice M.Jeyapaul passed the order on an application filed by The Laity Association of CSI-Madras Diocese, represented by its general secretary Major J.Victor and vice-president I. John.

The applicant projected many irregularities that would be committed by the respondent while electing the members of the committees. Counsel for the applicant sought the assistance of an Advocate-Commissioner in the process of election of the members of the various committees. The court was not inclined to appoint an Advocate-Commissioner for overseeing the election that was being conducted by the respondents — Rt.Rev.Dr.V.Devasagayam, Bishop in Madras, Church of South India-Madras Diocese and the Church of South India, Madras Diocesan Council represented by its secretary, Rev.Sampath Baghavandas. But the result of the election should be declared only with the High Court’s permission.

The court ordered issue of notice to respondents returnable by January 19. The matter has been posted for that date.
