KOLKATA: Beating the global recession blues, tea exports are estimated to cross 200 million kg in 2008, registering a sizable increase over that of 2007 when it had dropped by 37 million kg over the 2006 level of 216 million kg. Adding cheer to this development is the export figures to Pakistan. “The current chill in diplomatic ties has not impacted tea trade, at least till December,” a Union Commerce Ministry official said. Exports to Pakistan are being estimated at around 10 million kg. Re-establishment of the niche high-value Iran market is another bright spot in the Indian tea export segment. A delegation that has just returned from Iran says that major breakthroughs have been achieved in respect of making them accept euro as the currency mode instead of dollar since many banks here had run into problems in their transactions with some Iranian banks against whom U.S. sanctions are in place. Iran is a high-value orthodox tea market with imports of about 15 million kg.
