Puducherry to have State varsity soon

PUDUCHERRY: Steps are being taken to establish a State University in Puducherry.

The proposal will be placed before the Cabinet and Legislative Assembly soon and will be submitted for the President’s assent.

“We are planning to hold a meeting in this regard probably on January 19. We need to place the proposal for setting up the State University before the Cabinet and then in the next Assembly session. Later, it will be sent to the Union Ministry for Human Resource Development and then to the President for assent,” Public Works Minister, who also holds the Collegiate Education portfolio, M.O.H.F. Shahjahan said.

With Puducherry housing several medical colleges and engineering colleges, he said the State University can take up a lot of affiliation of institutions. “The Pondicherry Central University is doing research work and the State University can undertake affiliations,” he noted.

Plans are on to start an education city in Puducherry, the Minister said, adding, “If the education city comes up, we will need a State University. The number of institutions is growing and can be brought under the State University.”

Official sources in the Education Department said the proposed university would be situated in Puducherry, probably in the Tagore Arts College campus in the initial stages.
