Toll in hooch tragedy rises to 4

Tiruvannamalai: Death toll in the hooch tragedy that struck Bonthai near Thanipadi in Tiruvannamalai district on Monday rose to four.

Five persons consumed arrack pockets found abandoned in Bonthai. According to a villager, soon after they consumed the arrack they experienced vomiting and stomach pain. They were rushed to Thanippadi GH where they got first aid and referred to Tiruvannamalai GH. But they died on way to hospital. Three other persons were admitted to district headquarters Government Hospital in Tiruvannamalai. One of them, Gopalaswamy (60), was referred to Vellore Medical College Hospital. But he died on the way to Vellore. Another tribal woman Suwali died in Tiruvannamalai GH.

Food Minister E.V.Velu met the lone survivor. Inspector H.Gangairaj of Tiruvannamalai Prohibition Enforcement Wing and SI Purushothaman of Thanippadi station were suspended.
