PROFITABLE: Reeta Harish Thakkar, left, Collector, handing over chicks to a woman member of self-help group in Pudukottai on Monday. PUDUKOTTAI: With a view to enhancing the revenue to the members of women self-help groups (SHGs), the Animal Husbandry Department has taken up a special ‘Backyard Poultry’ programme to supply ‘Giriraja’ chicks to them. In all, 39 SHGs in 13 blocks in the district will get the chicks. Each member will get 10 chicks - nine hens and one cock. The distribution of the chicks, which commenced here on Monday, will be completed by the end of this month. Inaugurating the programme by distributing the chicks to women members of three SHGs from Vallathirakottai at the Collectorate, Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar said that the scheme would benefit not only the SHGs but also the consumers by virtue of rich content of protein in the eggs and broiler. The farmers would also benefit in a big way as its excreta was a bio-manure of high order. Deputy Director of Cattle Breeding and Fodder Development M. Rajendran said that the breeding of the ‘Giriraja’ chicks involved less expense and offered a higher profit margin. He explained the need for vaccinating the chicks. The chicks were distributed at Viralimalai, Annavasal, Kundrandarkovil, Karambakudi and Tiruvarankulam blocks on Tuesday. Assistant Director of Animal Husbandry K. Ramakrishnan, Veterinary Assistant surgeons S. Rajarajan and V. Ganapathy Prasad, who spoke on the occasion, explained the advantages of the scheme.
