dated January 13, 1959: Pongal festival

Mr. K. Kamaraj, Chief Minister, Madras, presiding over the Pongal Day celebrations of the Women’s Welfare Hostel, in Madras on January 12, explained the significance of the festival. He remarked that Pongal festival marked the enjoyment of one, who had toiled and laboured and obtained good results in the shape of a bumper harvest. One not only enjoyed oneself, but also arranged a festival in honour of one’s live-stock, which helped to reap the harvest. This festival brought home the truth that only strenuous work would bring them good results.
