BANGALORE: Three constables attached to the Commercial Street Police Station reportedly escaped from being caught by the Lokayukta police after accepting Rs. 10,000 bribe on Friday. The three, Arun Kumar, Ramesh and Raj Kumar, are said to have demanded Rs. 25,000 to release Umesh who was detained by them on Thursday. Umesh was intercepted while carrying certain hardware material and did not possess valid bills, it is said. Umesh’s friend, Dhananjay, approached the police to get him released and was asked to pay Rs. 25,000. Realising that the material seized was not even worth Rs. 25,000, Dhananjay reportedly approached the Lokayukta police, according to sources. The Lokayukta police then asked Dhananjay to telephone these constables. In reply, the constables asked Dhananjay to bring the money to the police station. The Lokayukta police gave him marked currency notes amounting to Rs. 10,000 to be handed over to the constables. However, the constables got wind of the Lokayukta police action and fled the place after snatching Rs. 4,000 in cash and a mobile phone from Dhananjay. The Lokayukta police are keeping watch on the residences of the constables. The jurisdictional Deputy Commissioner of Police has been asked to secure them. However, no official word has come either from the police or from the Lokayukta.
