Curious people have destroyed clues at the scene of crime, say police

Bangalore: Several persons have been detained in connection with the murder of an elderly couple in Jayanagar III Block here on Saturday even as the police claimed that vital clues had been destroyed by curious onlookers at the scene of crime.

A special team has been formed to crack the case.

A.S.N. Rangan (79), a retired Deputy Accountant General, and his wife, Vasanta (75), were found with their throats slit in their house in Jayanagar on Saturday.

The couple had been staying in that house for the last 40 years.

“We have not achieved any breakthrough in this case. Once we crack the case, we will brief the media,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Division) S. Ravi.

According to Mr. Ravi, at least three persons are involved in the crime, and preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had entered the house through the front door and escaped through the garage.

“We are awaiting the post-mortem report,” the officer said.

“We have not found any fingerprints and footprints at the scene of crime. Curious people had entered the house and destroyed the clues [albeit inadvertently],” said an officer attached to the Jayanagar police station.

However, some persons have been detained in this connection and are being questioned, he said.

Another officer, who is a part of the team investigating the case, said, “Sharp knives or daggers could have been used to kill the couple, but we have not found any weapon at the scene of crime.”

“On Friday and Saturday, the couple had received several telephone calls, and we are investigating them,” the officer said.

Though the police also suspected the hands of the real estate mafia in the case, they said that they did not have any evidence to support this at this juncture.

Cremated

Meanwhile, Rangan and Vasanta were cremated in Banashankari on Sunday after the post-mortem procedure.

Their elder son, Narayan Prasad, daughters Usha and Jyothi, and a large number of friends and family members were present.

The couple’s younger son, Ashwin, who lives in the U.S., is expected to arrive on Monday, Rangan’s family sources told The Hindu.
