KOCHI: Use of plastics in India is 6 kg against the world average of 27 kg. It provides an opportunity for the Indian plastics industry to grow, according to M.T. Thomas, president of Kerala Plastic Manufacturers Association. Foreign players are ready to invest in the plastic manufacturing ventures. During the meltdown period, the industry will seize the opportunity. The Indian use would double by 2010, he said. Engineering components, automobile parts, writing instruments, packaging, moulded furniture and healthcare items are produced by the industry. The manufacture of plastic carrybags constitutes a small portion of the industry’s activity. Recycled plastic is used for various purposes and the menace from plastic carrybags arises out of the lapses in collecting and sending to the recycling plants. The plastic granules produced from the recycled plastics are used in road tarring works to enhance the strength and durability of the material. The Plastindia Foundation, the apex body representing the country’s plastic industry, is organising an international plastics exhibition and conference in New Delhi from February 4 to 9. Over 1,400 exhibitors from more than 20 countries would participate in the exhibition, said P.J. Mathew, a representative of the Plastindia Foundation. India-China Plastic Industry Summit and Indo-U.S. Plastic Industry summit will be held as part of the event.
