Facelift for KMC

CHENNAI: One of the premier tertiary care institutions in the State, the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, is finally all set to get a makeover.

In November 2008, during the monsoon, the entire campus was inundated and access to several areas cut off. While the hospital waits for action from the government to improve infrastructure, hospital authorities have decided to launch interim measures to improve the atmosphere in the hospital.

“We have sent proposals to the government for improvement works, but while we wait for this to come through, we thought we might as well go ahead and clean up the premises,” KMC dean M.Dhanapal, who is also at present serving as Officer on Special Duty, Director of Medical Education, said.

As a beginning, he has drawn up an agreement with Sathya Sai Organisation to clean up the hospital premises, college campus and to develop the parks within the campus. Interacting with Ramani, State president, Sathya Sai Organisation, Dr. Dhanapal managed to kick-start the process early Saturday morning. The NGO has agreed to provide 100 young volunteers to clean up the area, free of cost. They have also undertaken to continue maintaining the premises at no cost to the government.

The dean added that at a recent high-level meeting attended by the Health Secretary, Collector, PWD and Metrowater representatives, he had presented a proposal costing approximately Rs.1.36 crore for permanent repairs to the hospital campus. The proposal provides for raising the level of the premises, clearing 40 acres of land on the eastern side, constructing overhead tanks and removing blocks in stormwater drainage and sewage networks.
