Truckers’ stir may gather steam

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Associations of trailer owners operating vehicles from and to the Chennai Port have decided to join the truckers’ strike on Monday.

Representatives of the four associations said that if members of the All India Motor Transport Congress who have been arrested are not released by Sunday, about 3,500 container trailers transporting goods to the Chennai Port would also participate in the strike. The agitation by the truckers entered the sixth day on Saturday. Those transporting essential commodities, including water and milk, also plan to join the strike if the arrested representatives are not released in the next two days. Milk lorry contractors conducted demonstration condemning the arrests made on Friday.

Milk supply

Aavin officials, however, said adequate arrangements have been made to ensure uninterrupted milk supply in the city. Aavin’s assurance followed an apprehension among consumers that distribution would get affected in the event of milk truckers joining the strike.

In case of any difficulties, consumers could contact Aavin 24-hour consumer care and support cell in 1800 425 33 00 (toll free) or e-mail www.aavincomplaints@gmail.com.
