Delhi faces power shortage

Staff Reporter

Peak load demand 3,083 MW

Load-shedding at several places

NEW DELHI: Even as power generation at the Capital’s gas-based plants was resumed, the Capital on Saturday faced a power shortage of about 600 MW.

With gas supply being restored, the Pragati plant was generating up to 100 MW by afternoon but there was no generation at the Gas Turbine plant. Under-frequency relays were also reported several times during the day.

State Power Department officials, however, pointed out that generation at most gas-based plants would become normal by midnight or Sunday morning.

“The condition will only improve. By midnight we are expecting most of the gas-based power plants to resume generation at their usual capacities,” said one official.

On Saturday the peak load demand was 3,083 MW while the city’s generation was only 876 MW. “Since the frequency was good, we could overdraw about 300-400 MW of power from the Northern Grid. Even though the demand for power was less on account of it being a weekend and the temperature being better than the previous days, load-shedding had to be carried out at several places,” the official added. While power distribution company NDPL carried out a maximum load-shedding of 185 MW, BSES carried out load-shedding of 110 MW. Generation at the Badarpur thermal plant was 442 MW, while at Indraprastha it was 137 MW and at Rajghat only 90 MW.
