2 ULFA men killed in encounters

Sushanta Talukdar

Guwahati: Two cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom were killed in two encounters on Saturday, one at Maligaon here and the other in Baksa district. The police arrested three cadres from the Chandmari and Noonmati areas of the city during searches for the perpetrators of Friday’s blast at Maligaon.

In the Assembly, the entire Opposition demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for the “failure” of the Congress-led coalition to prevent recurring bomb blasts in the city and elsewhere in Assam. The Asom Gana Parishad, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Assam United Democratic Front, the Communist Party of India and the CPI(M) staged a noisy walkout.

The House, however, unanimously passed the Assam Preventive Detention (Amendment) 2009 Bill, by which the maximum period of preventive detention has been extended from six months to two years.
