Arunachal highways gets Cabinet clearance

Special Correspondent

To improve road connectivity in the State

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Friday cleared a Rs.12,513-crore project to improve road connectivity in the border State of Arunachal Pradesh in the North-East.

The project includes construction of a 1,412-km trans-Arunachal highway interlinking the headquarters of 11 of the State’s 16 districts and upgrading the connectivity to the headquarters of the other five districts with roads of two-lane standards totalling 847 km.

Strategic importance

Apart from providing road connectivity to remote and backward areas, the project is of strategic importance as it would provide better road communication to the forward areas of Anini and Anjaw districts of the State, which border China.

The project, to be executed over seven years beginning 2008-09, would include a link between National Highway-52 near Roing and National Highway-37 near Dhola, including a major bridge over Lohit river between Dhola and Sadia in Assam.

To benefit Tinsukhia

The project would, among other things, benefit Sibsagar and Tinsukhia districts of Assam.

A part of the highway project, covering a total road length of 776 km, would be executed on build-operate-transfer basis, with the Centre providing 80 per cent of the construction cost to the contractors’ guarantee for the balance amount.
