NEW DELHI: Grandmaster G. N. Gopal finished a creditable second in the strong 70-player Gjovik 100th anniversary chess tournament at Gjovik, Norway, on Thursday. Seeded eighth, Gopal remained unbeaten to score 6.5 points from nine rounds. The Kochi-youngster topped a six-way tie for the second spot due to his superior tiebreak score. The rating performance of 2658, against his current rating of 2548, helped Gopal gain 14.60 rating points. Norway’s 18-year-old Jon Ludvig Hammer sensationally won the last four rounds to claim the title with seven points. He also became Norway’s 10th Grandmaster. Gopal, who invited the ire of the All India Chess Federation for skipping the National championship at Mangalore last month to participate at Gjovik, scored four wins and drew the rest. Gopal, rated 2548, notably proved equal to the eventual champion in the third round, scored over Estonian GM Kulaots Kaido (2556) in the seventh round. He also drew with GM-trio of top seed Sergei Tiviakov (Netherlands, 2685), Boris Savchenko (Russia, 2648) and Kveinys Aloyzas (Lithuania, 2533). — Special Correspondent
