KOCHI: Waves upon waves of the red brigade are all set to overwhelm Kochi as several thousands of red volunteers and CPI(M) activists move into the central parts of the port city on Friday as part of the rally being organised by the CPI(M) district committee to mark the party Central committee meeting, which is on here.

The CPI(M) district committee is speaking about a two-lakh strong rally, but even if only half that number turns up in the city on Friday, it would be a mammoth show of strength by the party. Party district secretary Gopi Kottamurickal has said that all steps were being taken to avert traffic snarls on account of the rally, which is being held at the Marine Drive.

Most parts of the city are already bedecked in red festoons and banners and hoardings have been erected at almost all vantage positions to announce the party Central committee meeting and the rally.

The CPI(M) leadership has appealed to its cadres, to be drawn exclusively from different parts of the district, to park vehicles in the positions assigned to them and move into the central parts of the city in small groups.

The smaller rallies have been planned to minimise the difficulties likely to be experienced by the people of the city on account of any massive mobilisation, Mr. Kottamurickal said in a statement here.

Leaders to address

The rally would be addressed by, among others, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, West Bengal Chief Minister Budhadeb Bhattacharya, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and party Polit Bureau members Sitaram Yechuri, S. Ramachandran Pillai and Brinda Karat, besides Kerala CPI(M) secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.
