Textile goods pile up in Tirupur

Staff Reporter

Tirupur: Lorry strike, which entered the fourth day on Thursday, have blocked the movement of textile products worth Rs .240 crore manufactured from the knitwear cluster of Tirupur, to various destinations within the country and abroad.

Textile sources told The Hindu that of the total volume, goods to the tune of Rs. 170 crore lying at the production base itself were to be dispatched to foreign buyers through sea ports like Chennai, Tuticorin and Kochi.

Fearing flight of orders owing to delays in supply of goods, many exporters were exploring the possibilities to forward their products by air to their buyers, even if it meant losses or a huge reduction in profit margins.

“The knitwear exporters here can not afford to lose any orders at this stage when they are already under enormous strain caused by reduced global demands,” A Sakthivel, president, Tirupur Exporters Association, said. The lorry strike was yet to have an impact on the prices of vegetables as there had been ample stock available in the markets in the city and nearby areas.

An official of Department of Agriculture expressed the fear that prices of ‘hill vegetables’ like carrot, cabbage and knolkol could go up in the next few days if the lorry strike prolongs.
