Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: Representatives of Plastic Manufacturers’ and Merchants’ Association have criticised the government for its decision to ban plastic materials in Puducherry from July 1. Speaking to reporters, association leaders said that a blanket ban on plastic items would add to the problems of the industry that was already suffering from recession and power shortage. The decision to ban plastics would render several persons in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu jobless. However, the industry was not against banning plastic items that weighed less than 20 microns. Instead of contemplating a ban on plastic items, the government should implement the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000 and Recycled Plastics Manufacture and Usage (Amendment) Rules 2003 to make the Union Territory litter-free. The government’s argument that the main cause for clogging of drainage channels was plastic waste was “not true,” they said. Dumping of waste wood, iron sheets, torn clothes and waste paper also led to the problem.
