Kerala boys dominate one-lapper

KOCHI: Vikas Chandran, from Kerala’s champion school St. George HSS, won the senior boys 400m gold by nearly a two-second margin in the 54th National schools athletics championship at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on Thursday evening.

P.S. Nikhil and Sandhu Sukumaran, in the junior and sub-junior sections, were the host’s other winners in the one-lapper. But Kerala’s Sindhyamol, who defeated her Statemate Indulekha to win the senior girls 400m, was the closest to the meet record, painfully missing it by one hundredth of a second.

While the host athletes were merrily picking golds, taking eight of the 16 yellows at stake, Orissa’s Dutee Chand was in a record-breaking mood, shattering the under-14 girls 400m mark in the semifinals and the final.

Delhi’s Ankit Sharma, the under-18 boys’ National record-holder with 7.35m, set the day’s other mark in the junior boys long jump. Ankit, from JRM Public School, broke the two-year-old mark of Kerala’s P.K. Anoop by nine centimetres with his 7.16m, third-round effort.

Junior boys (under-17): 400m: P.S. Nikhil (Ker) 49.77s. Long jump: Ankit Sharma (Del) 7.16m NMR, OR P.K. Anoop, Ker, 7.07m, 2006. Shotput: Ramesh Kumar (Raj) 15.88m.

Sub-junior boys (under-14): 400m: Sandhu Sukumaran (Ker) 52.85s. High jump: Mukesh (Delhi) 1.69m. Shotput: Gurpreet Singh (Pjb) 15.57m.

Senior girls: 400m: C.S. Sindhyamol (Ker) 55.19s. 5,000m race walk: P. Renuka (Ker) 25:40.92s. Javelin: B. Biji Mohan (Ker) 42.80m.

Junior girls: 400m: M. Sushma (AP) 57.65s. Long jump: Alga Winny James (Ker) 5.39m. Javelin: K. Rashmi (Karn) 35.29m.

Sub-junior girls: 400m: Dutee Chand (Ori) 57.4s NMR, OR C. Arya, Ker, 58.17s. High jump: P. Merlin (Ker) 1.55m.
